If you are closely working with the customs clearance department or looking to import or export vehicles in Canada, you might have come across the term ITN multiple times. Not all of us are well-versed with what it is and what it means in your entire vehicle shipping procedure. Hence, in this article, we will be dealing with ways in which you can effortlessly generate your ITN and move ahead with the vehicle transits.
Contact the customs broker
You need to at first contact your customs broker and let them know that you are ready to import the vehicle. There are multiple ways by which you can purchase the vehicle in the US and every method has a different paperwork approach. You will need to produce the papers upon getting asked by the broker. You need to inform them from whom you have purchased the vehicle and what is its purpose.
Here are the following documents that are required to be produced before the broker:
- Bill of sale
- Copy of the vehicle’s front and back title
- Importer’s passport copy
- Importer’s driving license copy
- Dealer’s name, address and phone number
There are other documents also needed based on your purpose of bringing the vehicle into Canada. You should sit and discuss the different processes clearly with your broker to avoid any confusion in the future.
Declare the crossing information
Your broker needs to know the following about your vehicles:
- Port and border crossing details
- The exact date of crossing
- The details of the transport company you are using. Their contact information and SCAC
Wait for about 72 hours
Your broker will be submitting the information you have provided them with. You need to wait for about 72 hours to hear back from them. The ITN will be generated by the US customs and you will have it emailed or messaged over phone. You can then decide if you want to proceed with the import with the help of a broker or you want a self-declaration on the vehicle.
If any of the information provided by you needs to be changed or updated, you must inform your customs broker at the earliest as this needs to be updated on the AES platform. Likewise, your ITN will be updated.
Now you can easily get your Clearit ITN number for Canada, which will further ease out the entire process of vehicle shipment for you.
